Amber Glass

Wedding Project Tutorial

 aux Colored Glass

One of my wedding centerpiece elements will be amber glass jars.

I chose amber to coordinate with the traditional brown glass of beer bottles.

Of the many Mod Podge + Food Coloring methods around, I chose to follow the tutorial at Carolyn's homework {here} because she had done some protocol troubleshooting.

Carolyn's Cranberry Glass

For coloring, I started with the "light brown" recipe on the back of a food coloring box and tweaked it several times to get the right color.

Even with Carolyn's instructions, it took S-I-X attempts to get my colored glass to look presentable. I didn't even take a picture of the 1st attempt (the mod podge never dried!)

Amber Glass Attempts
No bush marks, bubbles or crusty goop!

Read on for a detailed tutorial.

  2. What an amazing idea! I've started collecting Mason jars recently, and they are quickly piling up (to my hubby's chagrin!) I think this is a great way to spruce them up and get them out of the cupboards. Thanks so much for this tutorial!

  18. I want personalized mason jars for our wedding but the ones I've found online are very pricey. I did see an idea on Pinterest that says to write with a glue gun then spray paint. But I want my guests to drink out of them and I don't think the spray paint would be safe. I love the look of these jars but do you think they would be safe to drink out of and do you have any ideas for writing on them before coloring them?

    1. If you use pure mod podge without any water, then the stain should in theory be waterproof. But I wouldn't recommend drinking out of the glasses.

If you like colored glass: try painting the outside of the jar without adding any water to the mod podge.

For personalization: I am going to make chalk paint (recipes here), paint a square on the side of each jar, hand write people's names with a chalk marker. Can't think of another good & safe way to personalize jars.

      Good luck!

    2. You can find glass canning jars at the grocery store. Last time I looked they were about $10 for a dozen (maybe less?). Have fun!

  23. Any ideas what to do if your glass it too big to fit in your oven? I tried to do this with a wine bottle, then realized it didn't fit!

    ReplyDelete

    1. The oven is completely optional, it just speeds up the drying process.

A few options for wine bottles:
      - upsidedown on wax paper to dry. move them around occasionally as the mod podge drips down.
      - tie them to a coat hanger upsidedown & let the mod podge drip onto wax paper
      - paint the outside of wine bottle & let air dry.

  24. the color turned out beautiful and the mason jar looks great. guess its just one of those things you have to practice a little. Never done one myself.

  25. Can this be undone? I have a window that I want to try this on kind of a cheap stain glass, but if I change my mind in the future can I clean this off?

  26. Does baking the jar make the tint permanent?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello, I couldn't find your email to reply. I read that the mod-podge dye is water soluble. BUT I found that rinsing with water didn't remove my tint! So it's permanent to light washing.

  27. It is a cool idea. There are so many empty masons’ jars in our store room. I can take them out and use for our Christmas decoration.

  28. Could you use FOR dye instead of food coloring?

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is supposed to say RIT dye... auto type always gets me :)
