No-Sew Rufflekins

Anthropologie-Inspired Décor Tutorial

Rufflekin: Pretty Ruffled Pumpkin

Most of my craft experiments don't end so well. Here's one that actually had good results.

Two years ago, Anthropologie's holiday gift packaging included an envelope of felt circles and string. The circles had slits to thread them onto the string, creating pretty flower shapes.

Last year I re-created the felt flowers to dress up gifts.

This year I decided to try making large versions of the circles into pumpkin poufs.

Read on for a tutorial.

No-Sew Rufflekins

Ingredients
  1. Felt squares (for pumpkin body), 9"x12", qty: 1.5 per pumpkin (Michael's, 29¢ each)
  2. Felt scraps (for pumpkin stalk)
  3. Butcher's string, Embroidery floss, Ribbon, Twistie Tie (whatever you have)
  4. Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Note: items without prices I had on hand.

Total Cost = less than $1 per pumpkin

----------

Tutorial

1. Cut felt sheet into 6 squares.

2. Need 9 squares per pumpkin.

3. Fold square in half, cut rounded corners.

4. Cut 2 slits in folded edge.

5. Felt circle with center slits.

6. Cut a 12 inch length of string.

7. Thread circles onto string.

8. Fold circles like tacos as you add more.

9. Tie two ends of string together.

10. Tie a tight square knot & snip off ends.

11. Twist circles into pouf shape.

12. Cut felt scrap for stem:
Top 4", Bottom 3", Height 2"

13. Roll tightly @bottom edge.
Secure with hot glue.

14. Hot glue stem to pumpkin pouf.

Have you tried a crafty experiment that came out well?

Enjoy!

  4. That is so simple and so cute! I might use the same technique to make some flowers for hair clips. That looks much easier than my usual technique of hot gluing my fingers to the felt. Thanks for sharing!

  6. These are so cute! And I LOOOVE the name - rufflekins - haha! I feel like I should somehow turn that into a nickname for one of the dogs! But seriously, love these... you could turn them into a wreath or put them in a vase or hurricane... so many pretty choices!
