My First Wreath: A Décor Tutorial
ike Tires.
Our garage is full of them. Worn out oldies are always being thrown away. So I turned one into a wreath.
How did this all start?
Way back during T-Shirt Diary's Spring Stashbust (a month-long challenge to not buy craft supplies), I saw pretty spring wreaths everywhere and wanted to make one.
Yes, I said spring, as in six months ago.
Although my fiancé stated his dislike for wreaths, I thought he'd accept one if it were decorated with... bike parts.
I PS'd the wreath with coffee filters, using folded coffee filters according to Erica Domesek's ruffled t-shirt technique, featured in her P.S. I Made This book.
The paper origami flowers were created following a tutorial from Vanessa at Nifty Thrifty Things.
The ribbon hanger & decorative elements were upcycled from a Free People shopping bag & bike parts.
So now it's well into Autumn, and I've finally finished my Stashbusting wreath!
Read on for a tutorial.

Bike Tire & Coffee Filter Wreath
Ingredients
-----
Protocol
Step 1. Clean, and dry your bike tire
(circa April 2011)
-----
Step 2. Prepping Coffee Filters
(circa May 2011)
-----
Step 3. Glue Coffee Filters
- Tip: a good point of reference & place to attach the point of the filter is the tire "bead." Look for the thin line indentation just inside the inside border of the tire.
- Stop before you get all the way around tire.
-----
Step 4. Add Wreath Hanger
- Use scissors to cut a strip of fabric. I used a shopping bag.
-----
Step 5. Origami
(circa June 2011)
- Make paper origami flowers using tutorial at Nifty Thrifty Things, HERE.
- I started with 12"x12" paper cut into 4" and 2" squares.
-----
Step 6. Spray Painting
-----
Step 7. Assembly
- Use hot glue, string, clothespins to attach bike parts & flowers to wreath.
Have you ever put aside a project & finished it months later?

Wow, I never would have guessed there was an actual tire in there. It's barely noticeable in the first two images (I missed it altogether actually). Excellent use of free materials and upcycling. Love It!

this is super cute!!! What a great idea. I will have to totally steal the bike tire angle as my FIL is an AVID bicyclist and has plenty of cast offs for me to use as wreath forms. Oh the possibilities are endless! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteSo clever! This wreath is quite beautiful, but masculine all at once.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me, a bike tire? Then coffee filters. I keep asking myself where you get ideas like. A bike tire would not come to me, ever. I really think it looks great, thanks for the tutorial. Thanks also for linking to Sunday's Best!
